Dr. Austenfeld received his medical degree from the University of Kansas in 1983 and his urologic training at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City from 1983 to 1988. He completed an oncology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in 1989 and then accepted a position as Director of Urologic Oncology at the University of Kansas, which he held until 1996. He is now Associate Clinical Professor at University of Missouri-Kansas City and is in private practice at Saint Luke's Hospital. In 2009, U.S. News and World Report ranked the urology program at Saint Luke’s Hospital as one of the top 50 in the United States.
Dr. Austenfeld is board certified by the American Board of Urology and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the Metropolitan Medical Society, the Kansas City Urological Society and the Society of Urological Oncologists. Dr. Austenfeld is Past-President of the South Central Section of the American Urological Association, President-Elect of the American Association of Clinical Urologists and serves on the American Urological Association Health Policy Council. He is on Ingram Magazine’s list of Top Doctors in Kansas City, KC Magazine’s list of Kansas City’s Best Doctors, and is recognized nationally as a Best Doctor in America by Best Doctors Inc.
Dr. Austenfeld practices general urology with focused professional interests in urological cancers and reconstructive surgery. He performs minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery including Robotic Assisted Laparoscopic Prostatectomy and has special training in procedures for male and female urinary incontinence. He is one of the few urologists in Kansas City to perform bladder reconstruction after bladder removal for malignancy. He is a primary investigator for ongoing clinical research trials and a reviewer for several major peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Austenfeld’s practice is open to new patients by appointment.
